Carlos Melo Alves comments on the transfer of the investigation into the Portuguese Secretary of State to the European Public Prosecutor's Office

The investigation involving Hernâni Dias, the current Secretary of State for Local Administration and Spatial Planning, has been transferred to the European Public Prosecutor's Office. This was confirmed by the PT Public Prosecutor's Office, which opened the enquiry in October last year. The TV programme ‘A Prova dos Factos’ had access to the accusation. Hernâni Dias is suspected of having received kickbacks when he was mayor of Bragança. At issue is a flat in Porto.

To look into the matter, Carlos Melo Alves joined the TV programme ‘A Prova dos Factos’ to help understand what is at stake and why this investigation has been passed on to European prosecutors.

‘When it comes to the EU's protected interest, when someone harms the EU budget, the European Public Prosecutor's Office can investigate that type of situation, as this one, any crime that has to do with the EU budget.’
